I believe the worst Mercedes vehicles are the ones made for the US market. You are better off importing a German Domestic Market (GDM) equivalent if you want that expected (read:exceptional) quality.

I still own a 2008 GL320 CDI and this video didn't do it any justice. Besides replacing the air springs and hatch lock, it has been perfect. At 98K miles, I am still getting 24-25mph on the highway at 80mph all day long, almost no oil consumption and runs like new. Your fuel leak is probably a fuel return line between the injectors (that happen to me after a maint when the technician didn't push down the hose clip all the way down.

The problem is where they were built! ML's got a bad reputation in Australia when they were sourced from the US. From 2012 the ML's in Australia were sourced from Germany and their reputation has now been restored. I have a 2014 ML 2.2lt diesel. Done 113,000 Kl. Only work done to it on top of annual service is the fitment of two sets of tyres, one at 45,000 Kl and at 90,000 Kl. Still on original brake pads.

I used to be a Mercedes mechanic for over 15 years. The majority of them being diesels here. GL or ML, basically the same 164 are actually very good cars. I dont share your opinnion. The air springs are so cheap to purchase and easy to change for Arnott bags so that is not an issue. Timin chains really have no other problems than the tensioner, and you only have to change that if you have ears working. Yes, sure the oil cooler leaks in the middle of the V and yes it is pain in the ass to change. Usually you can only change the gasket. Other oil leaks are coming from the Y-pipe that goes to the turbo and you can change only gaskets to that. Diesel liek usually from lose hose clamps on the filter. Positive sides. You almost never have to change any ball joints. I think mine had original joints in every corner and had over 250 000miles on the clock when i sold it. Original alternator laster over 250 000miles too. Aircon was working, electric everything, seats were in perfect shape and transmission was spot on. Compare that to an older w163 ML and that leaking five pot 270Cdi with injectors leaking and every joint rattling and rear springs broken. Oh, and the interior breaking apart while the transmission either being jammed on the second gear or the oil mixing with the antifreez. Come on, 164 was and is much better than the previous model and same goes with the E series. 211 was total shit compared to 212.

My 2015 GL-350 has none of the problems you are whining about, and yes it has a spare. I love everything about the truck, no regrets. Mercedes partnering with Chrysler was the last straw for the once great car maker. Now, I would not touch any Mercedes. On top of that, the styling is horrible. One can not tell a Mercedes from a Honda or Hyundai anymore. If I were in charge of the company I would put modern engines/transmissions into the bodies of the old Mercedes cars. They used to make a beautiful car. The doors shut with the feel of closing a bank vault door.

Okay, sidebar comment: I wouldn't consider a $30,000 front-wheel drive, four-door "coupe" (sedan) to be "cheap". I get that it's a Mercedes, and that people worship the "prestige" of the brand 🙄, but fact of the matter is you can get a Lexus ES 350 for the same amount of money, and that car will run circles around a CLA Mercedes performance and reliability wise. This car had no business running like crap, even if it was cheap for Mercedes. Now with that being said. I've always been a fan of the GL Mercedes in terms of aesthetic, but I've always been hesitant because I have ever heard about that car is that it is a cesspool of problems. Even when getting the V8 model, the one I would get, it is still been known for a host of mechanical, suspension, and electrical problems. This is one reason why I would never buy a Mercedes, even if I do think a lot of their cars on paper are pretty cool cars.
